What is the market rate?

The market rate (or mid-market rate) is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on global markets. It is the fairest rate there is — the one you see on Google or Reuters.

Banks and money transfer services usually give you a less favourable rate and keep the difference as a hidden margin, on top of any visible fee. Comparing a provider's rate with the market rate shows what you really pay.

RemitLens compares the rates and fees of Remitly, Ria, Western Union, TapTapSend and more, so you can choose the provider closest to the market rate.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these exchange rates come from?

We retrieve market rates once a day from ExchangeRate-API, which aggregates data from central banks and commercial market sources.

Why is my bank or transfer provider's rate different?

Providers add a margin on top of the market rate to make money, sometimes while advertising zero fees. The bigger the gap between their rate and the market rate, the less your recipient receives.

Which provider offers the rate closest to the market rate?

It depends on the corridor and changes every day. Our comparison pages show each provider's rate, fees and how far it is from the market rate, so you can pick the best deal in seconds.

Can I use these rates for trading?

No. The rates are refreshed once a day and provided for information only. Use them as a benchmark to judge the offers of money transfer providers.
